LANGUAGE ARTS

Reading

Students are building reading stamina and interacting with texts they have read and/or heard. Our focus is currently on using fables and fairy tales to discuss problem/solution and cause/effect. Our reading groups are meeting to practice fluency and comprehension skills.  Students are also responding to texts to show they understand what they've read.  During stations students are reading released SOL passages from previous years.  They work to answer questions about the passages and write summaries of what they've read.  In teacher groups, we work on test taking strategies to help students understand what they've read and how to answer questions.  Check Tuesday folders for checked and graded classwork.

Word Study

Students complete all word study activities in class. New words are introduced every other Monday and tests are given every other Friday.   Bonus words provide students with additional practice with affixes and root words. Check Tuesday folders for graded tests.

Writing
